Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that is a part of a more comprehensive, 4000 year old Chinese medical system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture treats disease by placing thin needles into specific acupuncture points in order to remove energy blockages, which helps to rebalance the energy (Chi) in the body. The removal of these blockages allows the energy to flow in a more balanced manner down energy pathways known as meridians or channels.

Western, or conventional medicine believes that acupuncture needles, when inserted into acupuncture points, stimulate the body's neuro-endocrine system to produce natural pain killers known as "endorphins". These endorphins are many times more potent than morphine.  Acupuncture needles can affect the function of internal organs through the stimulation of autonomic reflexes that either speed up or slow down the internal organ function (also called somato-visceral reflex).  An example of this would be turning down stomach acid production or shutting off synthesis of inflammatory substances in joints.

Acupuncture can be performed either by inserting a hair-thin, solid needles into acupuncture points or by injecting those acupoints with sterile saline or Vitamin B12 using a hypodermic needle and syringe.  When placed under the skin these fluids will provide longer stimulation than when only solid needles are used.  This technique is useful when a patient is restless or cannot tolerate needles for more than few minutes.

Acupuncture has been used to successfully treat large number of diseases including: arthritis, seizures, inflammatory bowel disease, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, lick granulomas, inappropriate urination, incontinence, constipation, megacolon and anesthetic accidents and emergencies.

Like most alternative modalities, a single treatment rarely provides a lasting cure. If no significant improvement is seen after 6 to 8 treatments, the likelihood for success with this technique decreases. However, many patients experience marked improvement after the third or fourth treatment.

Acupuncture and Tui-Na

Healthy Pets offers K-Laser laser technology that electrically detects and stimulates acupuncture points on the skin. This procedure is painless and can help cats and dogs achieve a higher quality of life, especially in their senior years.

From hip displasia to infected wounds to soft tissue trauma, laser treatment is a great alternative to traditional acupuncture.

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical approaches for animals. Side effects are rare. An animal's condition may seem worse for up to 48 hours after a session. Other animals may become sleepy or lethargic for 24 hours after acupuncture. These effects are an indication that some of the physiological changes are happening, and are most often followed by an improvement in the animal's condition. Tui-na (pronounced "tway nah") is a form of Chinese medical massage that pet owners can practice at home. Our doctors can show you some basic treatments.
