Vaccinations Schedules
By law, San Francisco county requires that all dogs receive vaccinations for rabies. This year, the Hagman Law was enacted to allow veterinarians to legally waive the rabies vaccine in cases where the pet will be endangered by vaccinating. Our doctors can help you determine if alternatives to "shots" are right for your pet.

Overall, Healthy Pets advises  the following schedule for most companion dogs and cats:

Dogs: DHPP vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza) every 3 years.

Cats: the FVRCP vaccine (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calici, and Panleukopenia) every 3 years to minimize the chance of upper respiratory disease.

Alternatives
Because of the stresses vaccines can place on the pet's body, using vaccine titers is a great alternative. These are blood tests that measure the effectiveness of the previous vaccines. If the titer is strong, the patient has sufficient protection and may not require additional shots. Our doctors can go through this process and advise on whether or not the alternative is a good one for you and your pet.
